I have updated it annually since with recommendations provided via social media - do get in touch if you have a suggestion. The latest update includes the new Google AI Recommendations framework that was introduced in January 2021. A serious new competitor has entered the market to disrupt competition and perhaps reduce fees for retailers.<\/p>\n<p>This is the latest update where we compare the full range of options from free personalization tools to low-cost and enterprise services across these five categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1. Analytics tools based personalization<\/li>\n<li>2.\u00a0Retail personalization<\/li>\n<li>3. Content or commerce management system personalization<\/li>\n<li>4. B2B website personalization as part of marketing automation<\/li>\n<li>5. Personalization code libraries and modules (covers new 2018 announcement from Amazon)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Defining personalization<\/h3>\n<p>The opportunities for applying personalization are now much wider than the initial retail product recommendations.\u00a0 This definition of personalization from my Digital Business and E-commerce management book shows the opportunities for applying personalization in all types of business.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\"<em>Digital experience personalisation is the dynamic serving of customised content, product or promotional offer recommendations to website visitors or app users based on their characteristics and <\/em>intent<em> behaviour to support conversion and long-term engagement goals<\/em>\".<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Although many of us will have experienced personalization through retail product recommendations like those from Amazon, the definition shows the relevance of personalization to all types of businesses. For example, even B2B companies that don\u2019t sell online can use personalization to recommend relevant 'next best content' offers to sustain prospects\u2019 interest in a business and so nurture them toward a sale. Web personalization integrated with web analytics<\/h4>\n<p>When\u00a0web personalization services first appeared, they were part of expensive analytics solutions only available to the largest businesses, but today there are many services suitable for small businesses. These are two of the original services which are available today in a new guise and then a completely 'new kid on the block'.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"http:\/\/www.omniture.com\/en\/products\/conversion\/testandtarget\" href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/uk\/marketing-cloud\/testing-targeting\/automated-personalization.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adobe Target<\/a>\u00a0is one of the most established personalization engines evolving from the original Touch Clarity back in 2004 and then integrated into the Omniture analytics suite as Test and Target<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www-03.ibm.com\/software\/products\/en\/personalized-product-recommendations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IBM product recommendations<\/a> - Coremetrics Intelligent Offer was widely used by retailers for analytics, but since the acquisition by IBM has been offered as a separate product.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/analytics\/optimize\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Optimize 360<\/a> - This is the most recent analytics service offer added in the latest update to this page. Optimize is available free as AB Testing to all GA users, with some personalization features, but the full version of this Personalization option is only available to enterprise subscribers currently<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/recommendations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google recommendations AI<\/a>. Officially launched in January 2020, this is designed to serve retail recommendations. It's based on Google's experience of applying AI within their search engine. There is a transparent <a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/recommendations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pay for use pricing with a free trial<\/a>, prices are from $0.27 for 1000 predictions for low volumes. It focuses on a relatively small part of the customer journey compared to Amazon's <a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/retail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AWS for retail<\/a> which offers recommendations alongside support for other merchandising and logistics activities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Category 2. Personalization online features available as part of CMS or Commerce management systems for your website<\/h4>\n<p>According to the comment from Damien of Digicon, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sitecore.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sitecore<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kentico.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kentico<\/a>\u00a0and Adobe with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/uk\/marketing-cloud\/testing-targeting\/automated-personalization.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Target<\/a> have built-in tools to personalize content based on various rules, such as geolocation, search terms, referrers, lead scores and also provide more advanced personalization based on user behaviour and profiles.<\/p>\n<p>Episerver has an interesting approach to personalization which they describe as '<a href=\"http:\/\/www.episerver.com\/personalization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">No-rules personalization: more intelligence, less-work<\/a>'. Rather than traditional rules-based personalization used by many of the specialist services,\u00a0this applies machine learning and statistical analysis to visitor behavioral data\u00a0to tailor category and product pages without the need for rules configuration.<\/p>\n<p>The open-source e-commerce solution Magento also has personalization extensions available such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.magentocommerce.com\/magento-connect\/product-personalization-4002.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Product Personalization<\/a>, <a title=\"Commerce Stack\" href=\"http:\/\/commercestack.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Commerce Stack<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>Category 4. B2B, marketing automation, and publisher website personalization tools<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.evergage.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Evergage<\/a> is recommended as a tool that fits best in this category that has a wide range of options for serving personalization for content marketing in different placements on a site. Other alternatives for B2B personalization or non-retail consumer personalization are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brightinfo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BrightInfo<\/a>\u00a0(cost-effective)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ioninteractive.com\/interactive-content-capabilities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ion Interactive<\/a> (enterprise)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sitespect.com\/personalization-targeting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sitespect<\/a>\u00a0(intermediate)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the same way that content management systems now integrate personalization, marketing automation systems have now started to include this option. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hubspot.com\/products\/how-personalization-works\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HubSpot<\/a> - includes a 'Smart Content' feature to provide relevant content. They explain: '\u00a0With Smart Content you can deliver content specifically tailored to where a prospect is in the buying process, or content targeted to people the very first time they visit. Smart Content lets you target content based on anything you know about your contacts which are known as personalization tokens'. It also offers personalization of calls-to-action.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/uk.marketo.com\/software\/web-personalization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marketo<\/a> - Marketo has rules to convert the majority of anonymous visitors to a site based on previous interactions with site content. It also offers account-based marketing targeting of key accounts.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/uk\/products\/marketing-cloud\/platform\/predictive-internet-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Salesforce<\/a> - This service uses the 'Einstein' AI feature for personalization to deliver the next-best product.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Category 5. Website personalization code libraries and modules<\/h4>\n<p>At the end of 2018 Amazon made their <a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/blogs\/aws\/amazon-personalize-real-time-personalization-and-recommendation-for-everyone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amazon Personalize service freely available<\/a>, as part of Amazon Web Services. It\u2019s billed as \u2018Real-Time Personalization and Recommendation for Everyone\u2019. \u00a0As part of this initiative, Amazon have made their internal Machine Learning <a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/blogs\/machine-learning\/amazons-own-machine-learning-university-now-available-to-all-developers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">developer courses available<\/a> as have Google. Today, their courses cover the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aws.training\/LearningLibrary?src=courses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fundamentals of machine learning<\/a> and deep learning as well<\/p>\n<h3>Email personalization services<\/h3>\n<p>Of course, personalized recommendations aren\u2019t limited to websites only, as you will know from Amazons\u2019 newsletters.
