Start with your objectives<\/h3>\n<p>In order to know which metrics are relevant to you and which will help you establish your ROI, you need to know what you want to achieve.<\/p>\n<p>More traffic? More leads or subscribers? More reach and engagement with your audience?<\/p>\n<p>Only once you know what you want to achieve can you accurately measure your results.<\/p>\n<p>Start by thinking of your business objectives; after all, you\u2019re using social media marketing to help you reach these objectives.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019re clear on what you want to achieve as a business, you can start detailing your social media goals. Be very specific about what you want to achieve and adjust your goals as you go along; for example, you might focus your attention for a month on raising your social media traffic by 20%, but that isn\u2019t sustainable in the long run. Or you might notice that Twitter drives considerably more traffic than other social networks \u2013 in that case, you could adjust your strategy to focus more on Twitter rather than other social networks.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever you set a social media goal, remember to ask yourself one important question: how will this help me achieve my business objectives?<\/p>\n<h3>2. Establish your KPIs<\/h3>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve got your goals, you need to establish your key performance indicators (KPIs) \u2013 i.e. the metrics that you will need to monitor and measure in order to accurately measure your social media goals.<\/p>\n<p>If you can\u2019t measure a goal, then you should think of alternative objectives to replace it with.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if your goal was to get more social media traffic, then you\u2019d have to measure your clicks as well as your social media traffic.<\/p>\n<p>If you wanted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lilachbullock.com\/generate-leads-customers-business\/\">generate more leads<\/a>, then you\u2019d need to measure your social media website conversions.<\/p>\n<p>If you wanted more brand awareness, then you\u2019d have to look at your growth in followers and engagement.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, whatever your goals may be, you need to ensure it can be measured and that you know what metrics to keep an eye on in order to measure them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Traffic<\/li>\n<li>Reach and engagement<\/li>\n<li>Leads and conversions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>3. Start tracking your metrics<\/h3>\n<p>Now that you know what you want to achieve, as well as what metrics you need to keep an eye on, it\u2019s time to start tracking your metrics.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most useful tools you have at your disposal for tracking your social media success is a completely free one: Google Analytics.<\/p>\n<p>One reason is quite obvious: for tracking your traffic.<\/p>\n<p>But more so, it\u2019s also great for tracking your actual conversions; or in other words, the actions that your (social media) traffic is taking while on your website.<\/p>\n<h4>How to track your conversions<\/h4>\n<p>Head over to Admin and click on Goals to get started:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-124544 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Google-Analytics-goals.png\" alt=\"Social media ROI on Google Analytics\" width=\"939\" height=\"381\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Google-Analytics-goals.png 939w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Google-Analytics-goals-150x61.png 150w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Google-Analytics-goals-550x223.png 550w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Google-Analytics-goals-768x312.png 768w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Google-Analytics-goals-700x284.png 700w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Google-Analytics-goals-250x101.png 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 939px) 100vw, 939px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here, you\u2019ll be able to set conversion goals (up to 20 goals, so you\u2019ll need to change them up as needed) so that you can then track the actions that your social media are taking on your website: signing up for your newsletter, buying something, booking an appointment with your business, and so on.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, you can even give each goal a monetary value, which will make tracking your social media ROI a breeze as Google Analytics will automatically list the total value of all conversions made from your traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Back to setting up conversion goals, once you\u2019ve clicked on Goals you\u2019ll see there are several goal templates to choose from:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-124545\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/goal-templates.png\" alt=\"goal templates\" width=\"939\" height=\"379\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/goal-templates.png 939w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/goal-templates-150x61.png 150w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/goal-templates-550x222.png 550w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/goal-templates-768x310.png 768w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/goal-templates-700x283.png 700w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/goal-templates-250x101.png 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 939px) 100vw, 939px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You can create your own custom goal too, but it might not be needed as they cover most any common website actions; for example: making a reservation or a payment, requesting to become an affiliate, submitting a form, or viewing a piece of content, among many others.<\/p>\n<p>You then have the option to set 4 different types of goals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Specific link\/destination<\/li>\n<li>Duration and time spent on a certain page<\/li>\n<li>Number of pages visited per session<\/li>\n<li>Taking a certain action<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And finally, as I mentioned before, you can set monetary values for each of your conversion goals. For example, if for every 10 people who sign up to your list, one of them will buy from you worth \u00a31,000, then that goals\u2019 value would be around \u00a3100.<\/p>\n<p>These results will be automatically tracked by Google Analytics so that whenever you check your website traffic \u2013 in this case social media traffic \u2013 you\u2019ll be able to track your ROI too, measured in how many of conversions were made.<\/p>\n<h4>Create a data-driven marketing strategy<\/h4>\n<p>Digital marketing is hard, and measuring social media ROI is no different. How to track your social media clicks<\/h3>\n<p>When you check your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/social-media-marketing\/social-media-analytics\/\">social media analytics<\/a> (for example, Facebook Insights), you can also see how many clicks each post got.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s definitely relevant information, but clicks don\u2019t necessarily tell you that much about your social media traffic. Sure, you lean which posts got the most clicks, but you don\u2019t know how much time they spent on your website or what they did there.
