A bad headline, on the other hand, will get overlooked. There is too much amazing content being published every day and if you want to be able to compete with it, you not only need quality content that provides value, but also a headline that will make people want to click on your links, as well as share your articles with their own friends and followers.<\/p>\n<p>In this blog post, I\u2019m going to show you how to write headlines that drive traffic.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Use relevant keywords in your headlines<\/h3>\n<p>Keywords not only help with your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lilachbullock.com\/guide-seo-beginners\/\">search engine optimization<\/a> (as those are the words people use to search for content like yours), but they also make it clear what your article is about.<\/p>\n<p>Even before you start writing a blog post or any other type of content, you should first spend some time researching keywords and writing down those that would make great focus keywords.<\/p>\n<p>Use a keyword tool like <a href=\"https:\/\/neilpatel.com\/ubersuggest\/\">Ubersuggest<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/explorer\">Moz Keyword Explorer<\/a> to start looking up relevant keywords:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-125286\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Moz-Keyword-explorer-700x329.png\" alt=\"Moz Keyword explorer\" width=\"640\" height=\"301\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Moz-Keyword-explorer-700x329.png 700w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Moz-Keyword-explorer-150x70.png 150w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Moz-Keyword-explorer-550x258.png 550w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Moz-Keyword-explorer-768x361.png 768w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Moz-Keyword-explorer-250x117.png 250w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Moz-Keyword-explorer.png 939w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These tools will also provide keyword suggestions of similar long-tail keywords (of 2 or more words) that people search for, along with their monthly search volume (how many people search for them).<\/p>\n<p>Write down any relevant keywords you find into a spreadsheet, along with their monthly search volume; then, you can decide which of these keywords you want to focus on and use as a basis for your content and to write more effective headlines.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 2: Use words that make people want to read your content<\/h3>\n<p>Last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/buzzsumo.com\/blog\/most-shared-headlines-study\/\">Buzzsumo<\/a> (a content research and influencer marketing tool) wanted to see what makes people want to click on a headline; they researched 100 million headlines between March and May of 2017 and made some interesting findings \u2013 by far the most used phrase in the most popular headlines is \u201cwill make you\u201d:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-125287\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Buzzsumo-headlines-research-700x839.png\" alt=\"Buzzsumo headlines research\" width=\"640\" height=\"767\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Buzzsumo-headlines-research-700x839.png 700w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Buzzsumo-headlines-research-125x150.png 125w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Buzzsumo-headlines-research-550x659.png 550w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Buzzsumo-headlines-research-768x920.png 768w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Buzzsumo-headlines-research-250x300.png 250w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Buzzsumo-headlines-research.png 939w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Other popular word were \u201cthis is why\u201d, \u201ccan we guess\u201d, \u201conly X in\u201d, and \u201cthe reason is\u201d. Following that, most of the headlines that follow contain words that are designed to provoke emotion: freaking out, tears of joy, make your cry, melt your heart, and so on.<\/p>\n<p>So, what can we learn from this?<\/p>\n<p>For one, that you really need to try using \u201cwill make you\u201d and \u201cthis is why\u201d in some of your headlines.<\/p>\n<p>And two, if possible, use words that tug at people\u2019s hearts or their emotions \u2013 these types of words and headlines work particularly well on social media (therefore, more shares).<\/p>\n<h3>Step 3: Listicles, listicles, listicles!<\/h3>\n<p>We love listicles. Probably because they\u2019re easy and quick to read, especially if you\u2019re on a smartphone. They\u2019re also very easy to skim. And, in some cases, they can really arouse our curiosity.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re so popular in fact, that some of the world\u2019s most successful online publications pretty much only rely on listicles \u2013 yes, I am talking about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/\">Buzzfeed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-125288\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Buzzfeed-headlines-700x360.png\" alt=\"Buzzfeed headlines\" width=\"640\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Buzzfeed-headlines-700x360.png 700w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Buzzfeed-headlines-150x77.png 150w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Buzzfeed-headlines-550x283.png 550w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Buzzfeed-headlines-768x395.png 768w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Buzzfeed-headlines-250x129.png 250w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Buzzfeed-headlines.png 939w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And there\u2019s lots of data to back this claim up; like <a href=\"https:\/\/okdork.com\/we-analyzed-nearly-1-million-headlines-heres-what-we-learned\/\">this study<\/a> made by <a href=\"https:\/\/coschedule.com\/\">CoSchedule<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/okdork.com\/\">OKDork<\/a> that found that listicle posts are the clear winners of online content:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-125289\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Popular-headlines-study.png\" alt=\"Popular headlines study\" width=\"489\" height=\"808\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Popular-headlines-study.png 489w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Popular-headlines-study-91x150.png 91w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Popular-headlines-study-242x400.png 242w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 489px) 100vw, 489px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Listicles with 10 in the title tend to get more social media shares.<\/p>\n<p>So when you write a blog post try to think if there is any way to structure it into a listicle \u2013 and write a headline to match.<\/p>\n<p>A few examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>10 tips that will turn your blog into a lead generation machine<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>5 steps to building the perfect website<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>How to grow your business with these 10 amazing tools<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Step 4: How do you do that?<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cHow to\u201d is one of the most popular ways of starting a google search. From everyday problems like \u201chow to make a cake\u201d (well, maybe not every day) to more complex questions like \u201chow to generate electricity from waste\u201d and \u201chow to market your business on a budget\u201d, these types of Google searches are extremely common and therefore, people want to read these types of posts.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, these types of headlines are usually very clear and to the point and the reader expects to get exactly what they were promised in the headline.<\/p>\n<p>\"How to\" headlines also provide value to the reader: you\u2019re teaching them how to do something that they want to learn (especially if you do your \u2013 keyword \u2013 research and learn what your audience\u2019s questions and needs are).<\/p>\n<p>And the great news is that, like listicles, it doesn\u2019t matter what niche you\u2019re in \u2013 there is always something that you can show your audience how to do.<\/p>\n<p>A few examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>How to write headlines that drive traffic<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>How to build the perfect website<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>How to generate leads on autopilot<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Step 5: Analyse your headlines and learn<\/h3>\n<p>As you publish more content (and implicitly, headlines), you can start gaining a better understanding of what types of headlines work best for your particular audience, both in terms of the traffic they generate and the social media shares (although the 2 are usually closely related).<\/p>\n<p>To start with, you can check in WordPress which of your blog posts got the most shares \u2013 simply click on \u201csocial shares\u201d to order them by maximum number of shares:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-125291\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/WordPress-social-shares-700x310.png\" alt=\"WordPress social shares\" width=\"640\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/WordPress-social-shares-700x310.png 700w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/WordPress-social-shares-150x66.png 150w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/WordPress-social-shares-550x244.png 550w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/WordPress-social-shares-768x340.png 768w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/WordPress-social-shares-250x111.png 250w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/WordPress-social-shares.png 939w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ironically, it looks like my most shared blog post is on this exact same subject.
