It differs from social media marketing as you\u2019re not redirecting users to an online store, but offering them the ability to <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bigcommerce.com\/blog\/ecommerce-checkout-page-optimization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">checkout<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> directly within the network they\u2019re using at that moment.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key here is the opportunity it gives brands to create seamless e-commerce experiences directly within social channels, which happen to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/most-visited-websites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some of the most popular destinations on the web<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Rather than redirect users elsewhere (e.g to your website or sales platform), users can often review and buy right there in the moment. And although social commerce has been around in one form or another<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/online-marketing-institute\/infographic-a-history-of-social-commerce-and-its-uses-e9981a07565a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the last 15 years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s only in the last five that it's really taken off.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The rise of e-commerce<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why social commerce now? Social commerce has been steadily influencing a bigger share of e-commerce transactions. It\u2019s therefore important for marketers to seize this opportunity and look at how they can enhance the shopping experience for their customers across all channels, including social media.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Social commerce opportunities for 2023<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many reasons for brands to consider social commerce but here are three:<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>1. Reach consumers in the places that matter<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22% of consumers prefer to discover new products via social media according to <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hubspot.com\/marketing\/social-media-product-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hubspot's 2022 research<\/a>. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Users engage in various actions, from seeking out inspiration from people and brands, direct messaging friends for opinions, all while shopping and making purchases.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>2. Create frictionless shopping experiences<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every extra step in the purchase process is an opportunity for a potential customer to change their mind. Creating a seamless experience for shoppers by reducing friction points and offering direct and one-click purchasing options will boost consumers\u2019 confidence and lead to more sales.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>3. Take advantage of the e-commerce boom<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As mentioned earlier, we\u2019re seeing a big uptick in e-commerce across markets and territories. A larger proportion of consumers are becoming accustomed to buying online, giving marketers an opportunity to test and learn across different channels.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Focus on popular, lower-cost products<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although people are more used to buying within social channels, it\u2019s rarely the main reason they\u2019re there. People check in on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter to experience great photography, catch up with friends or see what\u2019s trending in the news.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social media users are likely to be in a distracted frame of mind and not looking to make big purchase decisions. To help reduce friction, make their lives easier and prioritize the lower-cost products you know already perform well, either within physical stores or traditional e-commerce.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Create a customized social shopping experience on Facebook<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the major benefits of using Facebook is that it\u2019s a ubiquitous, established social channel. Plus there\u2019s a chance you\u2019ll already have a business presence on the platform, so if you decide to move into social commerce it\u2019s a relatively simple next step.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the great features of using Facebook for social commerce is that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/business\/shops\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook Shops are customizable<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so you can create a tailored experience that\u2019s consistent with your brand. And users say that when they were inspired by something they saw, they would take steps to find and buy it straight away. So if you\u2019ve taken the step to create a Facebook Shop, then it\u2019s worth considering <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/business.instagram.com\/shopping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instagram Shopping<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, too (you will need to set up a Facebook Shop first; your Instagram Shop will be pulling data from your Facebook catalogue).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s probably fair to say that if you have products with the potential to stand out visually in users\u2019 newsfeeds, this strengthens the argument to create a presence on Instagram. But this can be difficult to do at scale, and especially so within social media where you have far less control over the channel\u2019s infrastructure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One opportunity to tackle the personalization challenge is by using chatbots. Although chatbots will have limitations as to how specific they can be, they can provide quick, simple answers to consumers\u2019 questions. And they provide many business benefits, too; they can save time, money and build trust:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-158025 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/social-commerce-consumer-trust.png\" alt=\"social commerce consumer trust\" width=\"512\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/social-commerce-consumer-trust.png 512w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/social-commerce-consumer-trust-150x63.png 150w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/social-commerce-consumer-trust-250x105.png 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of my favourite examples of a brand using a chatbot to enhance the customer experience is LEGO. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.messenger.com\/t\/LEGO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nicknamed Ralph<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the bot is available to consumers every day of the year and provides a great experience by quickly helping people choose and buy the perfect gift based on the age and interests of the recipient:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Lego-ecommerce-trend.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-158023 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Lego-ecommerce-trend.png\" alt=\"Lego ecommerce trend\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Lego-ecommerce-trend.png 600w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Lego-ecommerce-trend-550x550.png 550w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Lego-ecommerce-trend-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Lego-ecommerce-trend-400x400.png 400w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Lego-ecommerce-trend-250x250.png 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Partner with micro-influencers to boost credibility and reach<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no doubt about the many benefits of working with influencers. It\u2019s a tactic that can bring major rewards to any brand, regardless of size or industry. There are three key benefits to working with influencers to support a social commerce strategy:<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Association<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> - connecting your brand to an influencer\u2019s existing (positive) reputation\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Reach<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> - leveraging the audience of an established influencer<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Affinity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> - creating brand alignment and creativity with an influencer\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you can form a partnership that is relevant, affordable and authentic, then influencer marketing can be a great way of appealing directly to either an existing or new target audience. And working with influencers doesn\u2019t need to be expensive. Whilst big names like Zoella, Jim Chapman and Joe Sugg get all the headlines, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/digital-marketing-strategy\/useful-tips-for-working-with-micro-influencers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there are hundreds of micro-influencers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with less reach but potentially stronger affiliation to your brand:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Social-commerce-influencers.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-158024 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Social-commerce-influencers.png\" alt=\"Social commerce influencers\" width=\"512\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Social-commerce-influencers.png 512w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Social-commerce-influencers-150x96.png 150w, https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Social-commerce-influencers-250x161.png 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emarketer.com\/content\/influencers-could-help-drive-social-commerce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eMarketer last year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Adam Williams, CEO of influencer agency <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/takumi.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Takumi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, said that they\u2019d seen influencers enriching the social commerce experience in many ways and predicted more innovation in the future. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Instagram in particular, Williams said he could see the platform positioning itself to become a \u201cone-stop-shop\u201d where brands can solicit influencers for every stage of the customer journey, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cfrom announcing a new product, sharing reviews and tutorials, right through to purchase\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Structure your marketing plan around a funnel proven to boost performance.
