Of course, there are major differences in life experience and expectations between someone born in \u201883 and someone born in \u201899, but the important thing to know about the entire group is that they\u2019ve grown up during an information boom.<\/p>\n<p>This means they know exactly how to navigate online to get the info they want, and they\u2019re adept at ignoring all the \"noise\" along the way. So, as brands try harder and harder to reach this enormous group of buyers, how can your marketing stand out and be seen by Millennial eyes, and not be perceived as \"noise\"?<\/p>\n<p>There are three important characteristics to pay attention to across this massive generation:<\/p>\n<h3>1. Their online habits<\/h3>\n<p>Millennials are on mobile. According to the Pew Research Center, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2018\/05\/02\/millennials-stand-out-for-their-technology-use-but-older-generations-also-embrace-digital-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">92% of Millennials own a smartphone<\/a>. What\u2019s even crazier is that their findings point out that 28% of those smartphone owners use their devices exclusively to browse the internet.<\/p>\n<p>If the trend continues, the desktop may not survive outside of the workplace environment (except, perhaps, where gaming is concerned). Yet the workplace is generally not the best place for free-time shopping.<\/p>\n<p>Also, ZDNet did a survey, which concluded that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/americans-spend-far-more-time-on-their-smartphones-than-they-think\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">millennials spend 5.7 hours a day<\/a> on their phone. Interestingly, 13% of this group spend even more time in front of their screen, using their mobiles for a whopping 12 hours a day. So mobile is not only getting used \u2013 it\u2019s getting used a LOT.<\/p>\n<p>So, if you\u2019ll allow me to generalize about the entire generation:<\/p>\n<h4>Mobile is everything<\/h4>\n<p>So what can you do?<\/p>\n<p>Well if you\u2019re targeting teenagers, the answer is clear. Spend a lot of time developing your mobile website. Pour your energy and creativity into building apps that make the shopping experience fun and focus on encouraging repeat purchases and building up a strong emotional bond, a.k.a. brand loyalty.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re selling online, make sure you\u2019ve got a super-smooth online checkout and payment system in place, because that\u2019s what will put you ahead of your competition as more purchases are made on mobile.<\/p>\n<p>Want to reach an audience between their mid-20s and 30s? An app may just be the perfect way to get their attention. Plus, if you make the in-app experience a particularly fun or valuable one, it will take care of getting you a good rate of returning customers - something all brands seek.<\/p>\n<h4>Offer a pleasant mobile experience<\/h4>\n<p>Missguided does app marketing well with its <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/missguided\/id842503500\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cSwipe\u201d and \u201cApp Stories\u201d programs<\/a>. Run using technology from POQ, its app has a feature where customers can declare whether or not they like a product by swiping left or right. The items they like are automatically added to the user\u2019s wishlist, which is another layer of convenience.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, App Stories provide personalized recommendations based on purchase history. However, members can also submit their images as they wear their favorite pieces from Missguided, and their images might end up on someone else\u2019s recommendation list.<\/p>\n<p>This is the kind of mobile engagement Millennials can\u2019t get enough of!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_140775\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-140775\" class=\"size-large wp-image-140775\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Instagram-Stories-e1562570240333-700x627.png\" alt=\"Instagram Stories\" width=\"640\" height=\"573\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-140775\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>The mobile app features of Missguided ensure that customers spend a large amount of time looking at the available fashion products.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<h3>2. Their feelings about advertising<\/h3>\n<p>Millennials have gained a reputation for not liking advertising too much. This is quite an understatement considering that <a href=\"https:\/\/adlock.com\/blog\/why-millenials-block-ads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more than 70% of them use ad blockers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This was pointed out by AdLock, which also shared that 49% of 18-24-year-olds are the most active adopters of the technology. To add more salt to the advertisers\u2019 wound, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/andrewarnold\/2018\/01\/21\/millennials-hate-ads-but-58-of-them-wouldnt-mind-if-its-from-their-favorite-digital-stars\/#18a3ed7659ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Forbes\u2019 breakdown<\/a>, most of these young adults don\u2019t trust traditional advertising and are only willing to tolerate brief, five-second video ads.<\/p>\n<p>Although there\u2019s still more time until something is done about ad blocking, brands can combat this trend in its early stages. There are three ways you can showcase your products to the anti-ad contingent:<\/p>\n<h4>Tap into the power of referrals<\/h4>\n<p>There\u2019s one thing I know for sure: people trust their family and friends more than they trust what a brand or an advertiser says. The proof? From invest's infographic, we learned that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.invespcro.com\/blog\/word-of-mouth-marketing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">90% of people are more likely to buy<\/a> from a brand when it's recommended by a friend.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s cool, so make sure you\u2019re putting a little bit more effort into your referrals strategy. For instance, a <a href=\"https:\/\/antavo.com\/ebooks\/definitive-guide-creating-successful-loyalty-program?utm_source=guest_post_smart_insights_post_win_millennials_hearts_definitive_guide_successful\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">well-designed loyalty program<\/a> can provide the incentive for people to engage with the program, as they are rewarded with points or instant perks for their positive word of mouth.<\/p>\n<h4>Try influencer marketing<\/h4>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to find insight about influencer marketing and some agencies and sites are available to help you contact influencers with your business propositions and manage influencer campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>Consider making influencer marketing a part of your long-term marketing strategy, because when done right, a few blog posts or Instagram photos from influential figures can go a long way in terms of brand recognition \u2013 and bring in loads of new customers and a great ROI.<\/p>\n<h4>Make sure you know your brand advocates and keep recognizing and thanking them<\/h4>\n<p>Ever heard of Jeep? I sure hope so, because Jeep has done an incredible job of building and encouraging brand advocacy among its customers of all ages. Its marketing includes Jeep\u2019s Badge of Honor app, where customers can earn badges by documenting their trail rides, uploading photos, and interacting with the community.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re curious about what the brand is doing to reach millennials specifically, its got some really good partnerships that the target outdoor-centric lifestyle and athletes, like its partnership with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jeep.com\/en\/WSL\/global\/en\/#filter=all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">World Surf League<\/a> - something that teens through thirty-somethings who surf or love the sport are sure to appreciate.<\/p>\n<p>It has also featured athletes and celebrities in its social media campaign, like Brian Deegan.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_140776\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-140776\" class=\"size-large wp-image-140776\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Jeep-badge-of-honor-700x305.png\" alt=\"Jeep badge of honor\" width=\"640\" height=\"279\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-140776\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Jeep\u2019s Badge of Honor program is available on mobile, making it even more appealing for millennials.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<h3>3. Their love for communities and rewards<\/h3>\n<p>There are several types of communities that brands can cultivate. One is a loyalty program.<\/p>\n<p>According to Alliance Data, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/brands-must-show-loyalty-to-earn-loyalty-according-to-alliance-datas-new-consumer-study-the-rules-of-nextgen-loyalty-300615275.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">63% of Millennials believe<\/a> they have many choices for where to shop, so a brand must show them loyalty to earn their business. To stand out, find a loyalty program provider like <a href=\"https:\/\/antavo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Antavo<\/a>, which will let you reward brand engagement, referrals, and a variety of social media engagements.<\/p>\n<h4>Reward engagement<\/h4>\n<p>Another community to build is a community of sharing. Powerful brands that want to reach any target group know this is key. Take for example the massive camera brand that became both a household name and somewhat of a legend among active millennials: GoPro.<\/p>\n<p>Photo of the day. These are a few of the things the brand has done to build a community using its products. Just take a look around their site to see how inclusive it all is.<\/p>\n<p>Lines like \u201cWe\u2019re celebrating content creators like you daily\u201d and the clear display of each contributor\u2019s name makes it feel like an accessible and open community \u2013 and the young, active audience they\u2019re targeting is more than willing to contribute.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><p><a href=\"\/membership\/basic-letter\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/si_blog_banner.png\" alt=\"Sign up for Free membership\" onclick=\"ga('send', 'event', 'Blog link', 'Click free membership banner', 'goal setting and evaluation');\"><\/a><\/p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>So what can you do?<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Generate content through the community<\/h4>\n<p>Consider what interests your customers have and create a link between that and your products. Selling pens? Share user artwork. Selling gaming accessories? Get users to contribute awesome videos or screenshots of the gaming experience. Selling organic tea? Use a special Instagram hashtag for those special morning tea moments.<\/p>\n<p>Be inclusive and inviting. The only thing that has changed is the medium.
