However, for today's marketing where digital marketing channels are so important we need a marketing plan and template structure that are fit for purpose. That's why we developed the <em>RACE Growth System<\/em> since it details the communications activities that need to be used for success.<\/p>\n<p>In this post, I will explain RACE OSA, a practical three-part marketing plan structure particularly suitable for small and medium businesses to rapidly develop comprehensive marketing plans. OSA stands for:<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Opportunity &gt; Structure &gt; Action.\u00a0<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>For each of these 3 parts, I will summarize what you need to include and why. There are 5 steps in each part giving 15 sections in all. The template shares the key features of our RACE Growth system since it is designed to be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Quick to create and implement an actionable plan with simple steps<\/li>\n<li>Data-driven, defining SMART objectives based on forecasts<\/li>\n<li>Practical to implement using a 90-day planning approach to give you focus<\/li>\n<li>Designed for smaller businesses, but relevant for larger businesses too<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But first, we need to remind ourselves of the goals for our marketing plan and how it fits within the business as a whole. We will also introduce the Smart Insights RACE Growth System.<\/p>\n<h3>What is the purpose of a marketing plan?<\/h3>\n<p>The purpose of a marketing plan is to define strategies to engage audiences in order to achieve business objectives.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of a marketing plan is to ensure marketing activities are structured, relevant, and timely to achieve an organization\u2019s objectives.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a plan defining your company's sustainable competitive position, structuring and setting marketing goals, and defining the resources necessary to achieve your business vision.<\/p>\n<p>A marketing plan should include:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The current <em>performance<\/em>, <em>priorities<\/em>, and <em>direction<\/em> of your organization<\/li>\n<li>Its <em>marketplace position<\/em> in relation to external environmental factors including competitors and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/digital-marketing-strategy\/how-to-create-a-pestle-analysis-for-marketing-planning\/\">PESTLE macro-factors<\/a><\/li>\n<li>A critical analysis of your organization\u2019s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. We recommend using the powerful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/marketplace-analysis\/swot-analysis\/swot-analysis\/\">TOWs marketing plan analysis summary<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Clearly defined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/goal-setting-evaluation\/goals-kpis\/define-smart-marketing-objectives\/\">SMART marketing objectives<\/a> and a way to benchmark their success<\/li>\n<li>The means by which to achieve those objectives through strategies for STP: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/digital-marketing-strategy\/customer-segmentation-targeting\/segmentation-targeting-and-positioning\/\">Segmentation, Targeting and Brand Positioning<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Relevant and timely actions and responsibilities by function, product or service, and market segment<\/li>\n<li>Investment in <em>communications activities<\/em> to reach your audience and convince them to convert including, all important<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/conversion-optimisation\/conversion-optimisation-strategy\/always-on-marketing\/\"> always-on marketing activities<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Investment in sales and customer service activities to encourage them to buy for the first time and repeat purchases.<\/li>\n<li>The finances and resources required and forecasted revenues<\/li>\n<li>Regular measurement of progress and outcomes against benchmarks<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So, to summarize, a solid marketing plan outline has:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Clear, realistic goals<\/strong> that you can be confident of hitting<\/li>\n<li><strong>The best strategy<\/strong>\u00a0to achieve these goals against your competition<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sufficient details of the tactics and actions<\/strong>\u00a0needed to translate the strategy into action<\/li>\n<li><strong>A method to check<\/strong>\u00a0you are on track with your plans<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>The business context of a marketing plan<\/h4>\n<p>Where does the marketing plan fit within the business? Here are the differences between the two:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A\u00a0<strong>strategic marketing plan<\/strong> outlines the overall strategy within a market, connecting customers, competitors, and what the organization is capable of achieving. \u00a0It is typically created at divisional or company level.<\/li>\n<li>An\u00a0<strong>operational marketing plan<\/strong> outlines the marketing mix strategy that will be used to gain an advantage in the market. \u00a0It typically focuses on products; market segments and how marketing communications and campaigns achieve targets defined in the strategic marketing plan. It usually has separate sections covering tactics for customer acquisition and retention which will sometimes be covered in separate plans in larger organizations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In an organization\u2019s planning process, marketing links:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Customers\u2019 needs and wants<\/li>\n<li>Competitor value proposition and actions<\/li>\n<li>Strategic direction<\/li>\n<li>Organizational objectives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What should your plan include? Our recommended marketing plan structure<\/h3>\n<p>Before we get into the details, let's look at the big picture which defines the process you will follow to develop and implement your marketing plan.<\/p>\n<h4>3-step marketing plan outline<\/h4>\n<p>Within the RACE system, we call this process OSA to keep it simple - marketing plans don't have to be complex.\u00a0 OSA stands for Opportunity, Strategy, Action.
